When the Security Officer Certification Act became effective in 2007, companies intending to hire applicants needed to make sure they were licensed. The requirements to become a licensed guard included taking an approved course and passing the certification test.
For the state of New Jersey, in order to receive a standard license, you need to be 18, pass a drug test, pass a criminal background check, and pass the certification class. There are various programs or courses for you to certify in, you just need to choose whatever one that is appropriate for the type of work you will be doing.
There are fees you will have to pay for the processing of your application and to have your fingerprints done. After completing the application process for the license and fingerprinting, you have 30 days to complete an approved certification class. The standard training usually includes but is not limited to first aid and CPR, terrorism awareness, and gang related situations.
Failure to meet certification requirements within 30 days will cause your application to be denied. When you finally complete an approved certification class and get your license, you are able to work anywhere within the state of New Jersey. The license must be renewed every two years and you must submit your renewal before your license expires. You also must complete an 8 hour refresher course taught by a certified instructor.
