Reading the Signs of Depression
None of us are immune to the strains and stress of living daily in this competitive and aggressive world, unfortunately a percentage of our population fails to handle these pressures well and succumbs to depression. When a person becomes overwhelmed with all-consuming emotions of despair and grief that radically changes their perceptions of the world, then they may have already become victims of depression. The numbers that go with this disease are disheartening as it is estimated that almost 20 million Americans are plagues by depression.
Medical professionals agree that we will still see a rise in this figure over the coming years and that the best way to help treat this disorder is by arming ourselves with the right knowledge to identify the early signs of depression. As this is a disease that slowly creeps and takes its toll on an individual, many are caught unaware while some are hesitant to admit that they have a disorder which could worsen the disease and eventually may lead to death. In identifying these red flags, we need to look into the physical, mental and behavioral changes that are brought about by depression.
Pleasure – depression brings about a significant fall in one’s sense of pleasure and happiness. This is usually manifested by a sudden disinterest in activities and tasks that they previously find pleasurable.
Changes in appetite and sleeping behaviors – This disorder also affects the most common bodily functions such as eating and sleeping, which can result in excessive weight gain or alarming weight loss.
Mood swings – a depressed individual goes into a highly volatile phase of ceaseless mood shifts and temper tantrums. Other emotional manifestations of depression also involve feelings of self-disgust, solitariness, grief and alarmingly violent tendencies towards others.
Physical strains – another visible sign of depression is an apparent loss of an individual’s energy and zest for life, under this conditions, one inevitably feels a nagging feeling of tiredness and strain.
Mental instability – an individual who is depressed also becomes incapable of rational judgment and they usually display ineffectiveness especially when it comes to decision making.
An understanding of these telltale depression signs can mean help for you and your loved ones plagued with depression. As this is a disorder, it is also curable and the earlier a person admits the disorder, the faster he can get treatment and get a chance to live free from depression.
