My Thoughts On Conversational Hypnosis
Communication is indeed a tool that can be very powerful. This can be illustrated in the case of conversational hypnosis. Conversational hypnosis is a process wherein a person’s initial perception is altered with regards to the problem that is being faced.
Just like any form of communication, conversational hypnosis relies on the concept of interaction.
A session of conversational hypnosis usually starts with a stage called the affinity. Hypnosis only works if there is rapport that exists between the hypnotist and the patient.
This can happen if the hypnotist makes the patient understand that he understands his situation completely.
To drive home the point, let’s say that a hypnotist is working with an agoraphobic person to address his fear of being in crowds. When the patient tells the hypnotist that “it is very hard to be in his situation”, the hypnotist should say in return that “I do understand what you’re going through. Yes, it is hard”.
After the hypnotist has established rapport with the patient, they can now delve deeper into the process of conversational hypnosis through distraction.
During this stage, the hypnotist will attempt to sway the patient’s thinking into something which does not involve the problem. The hypnotist usually asks several questions to successfully allow the patient to think of something else.
Still using the same kind of scenario that I mentioned earlier, the hypnotist can try to make the patient think of something else other than his fear of people by asking “what it would feel like if he was to live all alone in the entire earth?”.
Those questions do not have to make any sense as long as the patient gets to stop thinking of his problem for the time being.
Once the patient has his mind off his problem, the hypnotist can start suggesting different ideas and thoughts that lead to the solution of the problem.
Because the patient has finally relinquished control over his problem by not thinking about it, the hypnotist could probably say things like “life is so much different if you talked to people” and the like.
