Going Back To School – Using The Internet As A Study Aid
It is that time of year again where students must start school, college and university. This can be exciting, seeing friends and meeting new ones. Unfortunately it can also be stressful as everyone tries to settle back into the habit of exams, essays and studying. It should not be like this though. Here are a few simple tips to take out some of the stress and worry related to studying and school.
Using the internet is a great way to do research but do you know how to use it effectively? You can find out things on online encyclopedias as well as wikis but this should simply be the kick off point to research. Use them to gain a general understanding or overview of the topic and to inspire ideas for further research. You should take this research and perform more detailed internet research for more targeted topics to study. There is so much information available on the internet outside of the most popular resources.
Making use of university department sites is a fantastic way to find correct and well researched information. A lot of the time they provide their students online material which may be viewable by anyone. Professors will be impressed that you looked for information outside of the typical course books and sites. Many teachers look down on online resources and prefer the use of academic books or journals. However, information from respected online sources is generally accepted.
An additional important tip is to use the internet for the one thing which it is famous for – communicating. Working with classmates is a fantastic way to get a better understanding of topics or find responses to questions. There are numerous question websites where people can ask questions and members will answer the questions. Be cautious that some of the replies may not be helpful or genuine. Do not let this put you off though – there are many people who genuinely want to help. There are also websites that let you communicate with professors and teachers.
There will also be many forums about your topic. For example, if you are writing an essay on the history of Spain, then you will be able to find online communities for Spain, the Spanish language, history and so on.
Being consistent will definitely help you with regards to study habits. Start the year by being organized and you will find it much easier to study when exam time comes. Offline, this can be done by using individual folders for every class and have different sections for different topics covered. On the internet and computers it can easily become challenging to manage files and resources. When it comes to exam time, it is often extremely hard to find stuff you saved several weeks ago.
For every class you take, create folders on your computer. If you want, you can create folders within this folders for every topic covered etc. Then when you do some research you can save to the appropriate folder (and not somewhere where you will forget it). Furthermore, if you use the internet for a lot of your research you should definitely use bookmarks and favorites to save resources. If you use an online bookmarking program then you will be able to store favorites online. This works really well for never forgetting anything. If you are working in school and need to return home, bookmark the website online and you will have access to them from anywhere in the world. Furthermore, online bookmarking allows you to quickly share favorites between friends. Online bookmarking is an excellent way to work collaboratively and organize resources better.
Anyone can make use of personal homepages to help with studying. You can use a customized homepage to share links with friends and classmates. If you share the account then everyone can use the resource to build a personalized directory of information. There are many services that allow you to create wikis and resource sites. You will then be able to email your friends: “hey, why not check out my free online homepage” and people will be able to look at your home page and also use it as a resource. Working collectively like this is a great way to enjoy the work and have people motivate you.
