College Students – You Can Apply For Food Stamps

One invariably expensive part of life is college. With the long list of expenses from books, to bedding, to rent, it puts quite a strain on most student’s wallets, leaving nothing in the budget for food.

Many universities offer a meal plan to students, but that may apply only to those living on campus, or the food may not be to your liking. Some college students opt to buy their own food to avoid taking out extra loan money for food that they may not eat.

Many students borrow most of the money they spend during their time at college, and need some extra help for food during those years. Luckily, the federal government created a program called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), just for that!

The program is titled the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and is open to everyone, no matter what your financial background may be. No matter where you are from, SNAP is available to you. To figure out your eligibility status, there is a short self-assessment test online. It will request information about your finances, living situation, etc.

The items available to buy with food stamps are quite varied and include things such as produce, bakery items, meat, fish, poultry, breakfast cereal, and even seeds and plants that are food producing.

How do you use SNAP? Depending on what state you are applying in, SNAP may assign you an EBT card (much like a debit card), or paper stamps.

In 2008, the average person received $101 to spend on food each month from SNAP. While this may not seem like much, keep in mind that the amount awarded depends on a variety of factors including the number of people needing assistance, the amount of your monthly income, and the total of your expenses each month.

If you are a college student that is struggling juggling going to classes and getting good grades, and making money to support your expenses and food, then using the SNAP food stamp program may be something you want to consider.
