Choosing an Online College
Making the right choice for online degrees will take some work but is worth the effort. It is not prudent to accept any information from a school at face value. Verification of any and all claims must be made before applying to the school. Once a course has been paid for it is too late to find out the degree is one not accepted or respected.
The very first piece of information needed is whether or not the institution is accredited. The accrediting agencies are regional and are in limited number. If an institution states it is accredited, find out by who and then make sure the agency is legitimate. The next step is finding out if the program you want a degree for is accredited. If not, it may keep you from getting an advanced degree.
Decide what your major will be and what your long term goals are. If you would like to start with an associates degree and then move on to a bachelors degree, you need to know what credits are transferable. A list can be requested from the initial school. To be completely sure ask the future school what schools they accept credits from.
There are many traditional colleges and universities that offer online classes. Some also offer online degrees. Ask if any courses will need to be taken at their location or if it is completely online. The online schools may have locations they wish you to come to for testing. If you are unable to get to another location, make sure the classes and testing are all done online.
Look into the background of the professors in the major you are interested in. Their educational background information should be on the school website. As should any experience in the field and how many years they have been doing either or both.
Get in contact with a financial aid officer for assistance with paying for school. Few people are able to pay out of pocket. The officer should be able to give you guidance on what scholarships and grants you can apply for. Do not forget to look into school loans as well. The online schools sometimes offer payment plans.
The course work for online degrees will be just as challenging as in class courses. The classes are usually set up so they can be viewed at any time you have available. Even when traveling they will be accessible because it is all online. The professor can be reached by email and your work will be turned in this way as well. Going for a degree in this way will require self discipline and dedication.
