Electromagnetic radiation emanating from portable phones is believed to be causing the mysterious phenomenon of colony collapse disorder; linking the two is the objective of ongoing research of beehive activity. As a result of the study, the Panjab University group apparently found a direct connection between the hives and cell phones.

They learned that honey was being produced at a slower rate than normally would be expected when cell phones were used close by. Finally, a point was reached that some hives even ceased to produce honey drastically limiting the life of the colony. Additionally, the bee queen even stopped reproducing any eggs that were destined to mature into new workers so that there were fewer bees available to function within the colony. Since they don’t live that long, bees are assigned specific roles to be performed that are necessary for the entire hive’s survival; thus, beehives cannot lose a great proportion of their bees at one time or they won’t be able to recover from this great blow.

The causal mechanism behind colony collapse disorder is unknown as of yet for researchers who also cannot fathom how honey is produced. Some scientists believe that there is a basic component in bees chemical or DNA makeup that is being strained by the introduction of cell phone usage. In particular, some have speculated that the radiation is affecting a natural substance found in bees called Cryptochrome. This plays a vital role in bees location and navigation sensing abilities that bees use to move around; if this substance is damaged somehow by the incoming cell phone radiation bees would get lost in the wild.

Cryptochrome rich bees that are inundated with cell phone emissions seem to have great difficulty in moving around intelligently; they get lost and are unable to return home. If it becomes possible to validate the findings that a linkage between cell radiation and hive collapse then this would cause a great impact upon cell phone users and their favorite toy; bees help in pollination and the world can not afford to decrease food production with a growing global population.
