Anxiety and Coffee Quaffing May Be Linked
Have you experienced the grinding, miserable pangs of anxiety? A majority of us have. I recall the day I initially realized I had an anxiety problem clearly. I, like many, was at work and a deadline was coming up quite rapidly for a project I’d been assigned, and my supervisor walked into my work area and demand to know what the status was. Fear washed over me and drenched me like a bucket of ice cold water.
I was physically cold, and yet had a film of moist sweat make a sudden appearance all over my body starting with my forehead, top of my head, and hands. What could I say? I had in fact been procrastinating. The obvious truth is that my anxiety was induced by a type of behavior problem, yes, but also a neurochemical imbalance. I’d been imbibing approximately six to seven cups of coffee per day to keep the momentum moving, and this was obviously excessive indeed.
What I did not realize is that most of the coffee consumption was entirely not even necessary. In fact, every single mug that I drank only increased my dependence to a greater degree, and by the following week was only glossing over the symptoms of withdrawal that the coffee itself had manufactured. This frequent coffee drinking was causing my moods and stress system to alternate with violence from one end of the spectrum to the other all entirely dependent on my blood level of caffeine.
One of the principal ways that caffeine can throw us off balance is by messing with sleep. Caffeine has a particularly long half-life of approximately 4-6 hours and this implies that a mere half of the caffeine in your body is removed a whole six hours after drinking. This consequently results in the fact that depending on the quantity you drank, and the approximate time that you drank it, coffee can most assuredly interfere with your ability to dive into those deeper levels of restorative sleep.
It means that when you wake up the next morning after you are going to be quite sleepy, and probably just a little bit grouchy. The next step in the cycle is that you will reach for that morning pot of coffee, and perhaps because you already feel so lethargic you will imbibe just a little bit more than you really need and therefore put yourself on the verge of a panic attack rather rapidly… and all you need is just the trigger to set the ball in motion.
